A WordPress Geocaching Blog

Geocaching Tools

For those of you that are new to geocaching, or those of you that would like to know how we go about our geocaching, I thought I’d create this page detailing what GPS receivers we use, how we use our PDA for paperless geocaching, and the software that we use to assist us with our geocaching.

This page is very much “UNDER CONSTRUCTION”.

GPS Receivers

We use a Garmin Nuvi 310 in our car which directs us along roads close to the cache location. Before each cache hunt we update the Nuvi with a special GPI file created using a purpose created export from GSAK.

We also use a Garmin Etrex Legend which is used to track our geocaching expeditions and most importantly gets us within metres of the final cache location.

PDA

We use an old Palm Tungsten T in order to go paperless geocaching.

We have loaded Cachemate software on the Palm to manage all the cache details that are stored on the PDA. Cache details are transferred to the Palm via a GSAK export. Cache finds are then imported to GSAK via a GSAK macro created specifically to import user logs.

Software

The most important piece of software we use is GSAK.

There are numerous macros we use with GSAK to assist us plan our geocaching expeditions and to keep us up to date with all the cache details. Another GSAK macro automatically updates our profile on the geocaching web site.

As we mentioned above, we use Cachemate on our PDA.

Other software that we use include Google Earth, OziExplorer and MapSource which assist us to plan and map our geocaching expeditions.

This Website

This website is maintained using WordPress. There are also a number of plugins on the back end of WordPress which maintains this website.

As the website was started when we commenced geocaching, it will be an on-going reminder for us of our geocaching exploits.
